Arizona tint limits for passenger cars
Front side windows
Must let in at least 33% of visible light, measured with the film and the glass together.
Rear side windows
Any darkness is allowed behind the driver.
Back windshield
Any darkness is allowed, with outside mirrors on both sides of the vehicle.
Windshield
Non-reflective tint is allowed only above the AS-1 line marked on the glass.
Reflectivity
Side window film cannot be more than 35% reflective, so mirrored films are out.
Red or amber
Red and amber tints are not allowed.
This is a plain-English summary for general information, not legal advice. Tint rules can change and medical exemptions exist. Check the current rules with the Arizona Department of Public Safety or the Arizona Revised Statutes before you choose a shade. We will always tell you what is legal for each window.
What VLT means
Reading a tint percentage
VLT stands for visible light transmission: the share of light that gets through the window. A lower number means a darker window. Factory glass already blocks some light, so the reading for film plus glass is a little lower than the film alone.
- 70% film: barely visible, mostly heat and UV control
- 35% to 50%: a noticeable tint, a common choice for front side windows once the glass is factored in
- 20%: dark, popular for rear windows
- 5%: limo tint, rear windows only in Arizona
